Monteodorisio
Historical cornerstone of the coastal territory of Vastese, Monteodorisio inherited in the Middle Ages the control function carried out in antiquity by Histonium, today's Vasto.
The first evidence of the County of Monteodorisio, which boasted 13 castles, dates back to 993 AD. when the fiefdom passed into the hands of Oderisio, count of the Marsi, from whom the town takes its name.
The historic center with its walls, watchtowers and access gates to the village recalls its evident medieval origins in every corner.
Church of San Giovanni Battista
The church of San Giovanni Battista preserves the foundation walls and the mighty bell tower from the original fourteenth-century structure which, as in other centers in the Vastese area, were part of the defensive system of the fortified village.
Monteodorisio Castle
The highest part of the fortress is occupied by the majestic and panoramic Castle.The original structure, from the 15th century, had a rectangular plan and four circular corner towers.
The structure was converted into a noble residence in the 17th and 19th centuries, when several aristocratic families, including the d'Avalos, took turns in ownership.
Of the castle, the building on the smaller south-east side and its three corner towers, joined by crenellated walls, remain visible.
From the west tower, the one that has been best preserved over the centuries, you can admire a breathtaking panorama that goes from the Majella to the Gran Sasso up to the sea and the Tremiti Islands.
